Kwanza is developing a utility-scale battery energy storage project to firm renewable generation, strengthen grid stability, and unlock additional productive demand. Grid-scale storage captures clean power that would otherwise be curtailed or wasted and releases it when the network and its customers need it most, improving the quality and reliability of supply while raising the value of existing and planned renewable capacity. The programme is designed to be modular and replicable, allowing the same model to be applied in further markets as power systems across Sub-Saharan Africa absorb higher shares of variable renewable generation.
Kwanza Involvement
Kwanza is the originating sponsor and developer of the project, leading technical feasibility, grid integration and system studies, commercial and regulatory structuring, and the mobilisation of strategic technical and financing partners. Detailed engineering parameters, site selection and interconnection arrangements are held confidentially at this stage of development and are shared with counterparties under appropriate confidentiality arrangements.
Strategic Relevance
Storage is becoming the decisive enabler of Africa's clean energy transition. It converts intermittent renewable output into firm, dispatchable power, delivers the fast frequency and voltage support that developing networks increasingly require, and can defer or reduce costly network reinforcement. Adding storage to Kwanza's platform strengthens the bankability of the wider generation and transmission portfolio and positions the business for the ancillary services market now emerging across the region. Kwanza welcomes early engagement from investors, lenders and technology partners interested in this project.
